International Refrigerated Trucking

One of the fastest growing segments of logistics is international refrigerated transport. Today, in times of globalization, goods are transported over very long distances. This also applies to food, which is often transported even from continent to continent.

This task is performed by refrigerated transport, which allows you to safely transport food and other products requiring temperature control. The demand for this service is due to the fact that many types of imported products are perishable and require special storage and transportation conditions.

What is refrigerated transport

Refrigerated cargo transportation services

Not all goods and goods can be transported by any means. This primarily applies to those products that are sensitive to external factors, including temperature. Therefore, refrigerated transport is used for their transportation. Refrigerated transport is a rather specific type of transport.

Its main purpose is to transport cargo with the ability to maintain a certain temperature regime in the cargo compartment. Transportation of goods with a temperature regime takes a significant place in international transportation by road and is carried out by vehicles with an isothermal booth and refrigerators.

The fundamental difference between this type of transport is the structural feature of the cargo compartment. In a insulated van each compartment wall is protected from outside air. Refrigerated vehicles contain special refrigeration equipment capable of changing the temperature inside the cargo compartment.

Specialized vehicles are used in refrigerated trucks. We are talking about transport refrigerators. Refrigerated trucks are divided into three classes depending on their ability to maintain temperature conditions – A, B, C. The difference between cars lies in the temperature they maintain.

Refrigerated Classification

  • class «А» the temperature is maintained in the range of 0° С до +12° С;
  • class «В» – от -10° С до +12° С;
  • class «С» – от -20° С до +12° С.

When international transportation of perishable goods for transportation by refrigerator over long distances, a homogeneous cargo is selected that requires a certain temperature regime. If it is necessary to deliver goods requiring different temperature regimes, road trains with sectional bodies are used, in which different levels of cooling are maintained.

Refrigerated cargo transportation is a mode of transport that creates many problems for transport companies. Most of the products selected for refrigerated transport require a controlled temperature and special equipment that the fleet is equipped with. The goods delivered by this mode of transport include:

  • food with increased sensitivity to external conditions;
  • plants and flowers;
  • frozen foods, vegetables and fruits and berries;
  • chemicals (including «dangerous goods»);
  • cosmetics;
  • medicines and medicines ;
  • high-tech equipment and measuring instruments requiring special temperature control.

How safety is ensured in refrigerated transport

Refrigerated transportation is a responsible business and subject to risks associated with overheating or hypothermia of the transported cargo. To control the maintenance of the desired temperature along the way, additional equipment is used to ensure the safety of the cargo. To record and fix the temperature along the way, recorders are used.

Refrigerated vehicles are equipped with a remote thermometer for constant temperature monitoring during the journey and GPS monitoring, thanks to which you can track the current position of the vehicle and the current temperature of the cargo in real time.

Remote thermometer for refrigerated transport

The movement of a refrigerated van is constantly displayed on monitors, which are monitored by the operators of the carrier company and in case of a breakdown they send an additional car. Trained drivers and forwarders oversee the entire process from the moment of loading.

Refrigerated transport rules

  • Vehicles used in refrigerated cargo transportation must be equipped with appropriate refrigeration and temperature control equipment.
  • The refrigeration unit must be able to lower the temperature depending on the goods being transported.
  • Perishable foodstuffs must be transported in special refrigerators or ice warehouses.
  • Ice chambers must be of such capacity that the cooling source will reduce the temperature to the required level, and then maintain it for at least 12 hours /span>
  • The cold room must be equipped with a mechanical compressor unit to reduce the temperature and keep it constant.

It is worth mentioning that national and international regulations oblige refrigerated vehicles to be equipped with recording instruments that allow frequent and regular measurements of the temperature of the cargo compartment. A car that meets all the requirements receives a “vehicle certificate”.

Design features of refrigerated vehicles

Refrigerated transport

In refrigerated transport, in addition to semi-trailers, trailers and trucks with bodies are used. The supply of manufacturers is constantly growing. Vehicles for temperature controlled goods transport are used for the transport of perishable goods, especially foodstuffs, but also, for example, pharmaceuticals.

Transport carried out using them must comply with strict health standards. The design features of refrigerated vehicles are similar to each other, isotherms and cold rooms are based on aluminum panels, polyester-glass foil, often called laminate, and the insulator is rigid polyurethane foam or polystyrene. The construction of the body on an independent frame makes it very robust. In the event of a vehicle breakdown, the body or chassis can be replaced without affecting the temperature of the refrigerator compartment.

Refrigerated trailers can transport almost all products requiring controlled temperatures and are also available with lifting eyes and suitable combined transport equipment. Combined transport in different temperature zones is possible thanks to the thermal baffle. A so-called flexible duct mounted on the ceiling that distributes cold air evenly (also good for stacking).

Refrigerated transport regulations

Every shipping company involved in international refrigerated transport must have adequate insurance to protect the goods being transported. In the event of damage to the goods, the manufacturer or distributor will receive appropriate compensation under the insurance policy.

All standards for international refrigerated transport are specified in the international ATP agreement. The driver performing the transportation must have a valid medical record, and the vehicle must have a thermograph installed. The condition of the vehicles is also important. They must be systematically cleaned and disinfected. All this so that the transported food products are delivered to their destination safe and sound.

Особенности логистики международных рефрижераторных перевозок

Logistics of international refrigerated transport
For temperature-controlled products, it is important that delivery is done on time and in the right conditions. Therefore, one of the main conditions for fast and safe international transportation of perishable and special cargo by refrigerator is the correct and folded organization of transportation logistics.

Refrigerated transportation requires efficient logistics and communication, the ability to control temperature and constant monitoring of the route to ensure that the order is delivered on time. Previously, refrigerated transportation was used no more than for the transportation of frozen products, meat and other food products requiring a special temperature regime in the cargo compartments.

Currently, the lion’s share of goods transported in the “Controlled temperature” are pharmaceuticals that require increased attention to transport conditions. In short, refrigerated transport is one of the foundations of the modern transport market, and its implementation can be successful only with proper care and increased safety measures.

Refrigerated cargo transportation of perishable and special cargo

Our company provides refrigerated cargo transportation services requiring different temperature regimes. All vehicles are certified for the transport of food. The temperature in the cargo compartment can be adjusted in the range from -25 degrees C to +30 degrees C.

The transportation of our customers’ goods is constantly monitored thanks to GPS transmitters and temperature sensors installed in the cargo area, which allows us to guarantee the highest quality of services. Transportation prices from our company vary depending on the volume of cargo, the class of the refrigerator, the timing and the route chosen.
